Tips for driving safely in the upcoming cold snap
As snow and ice are forecast for this week, here are our tips for driving in colder weather and reducing the risks of accidents this winter.
Met Eireann have issued a snow-ice warning for parts of the country, and as temperatures drop and the colder months settle in, driving conditions across Ireland could quickly become hazardous.
Cold weather driving requires extra vigilance and preparation. Some of the risks of driving in winter conditions include:
- Icy roads. Black ice, particularly on bridges and shaded areas, can be nearly invisible, making sudden skids a potential hazard.
- Reduced traction: Snow, slush, and sleet can make it harder for tyres to grip the road, increasing stopping distances.
- Visibility issues: Frosted windscreens and fog can obscure a driver’s view, increasing the risk of collisions.
By taking precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of an accident. Here are our tips for driving in cold weather and reducing the risks of accidents this winter.
1. Prepare your vehicle:
Ensure tyres are in good condition with the recommended tread depth for winter driving (at least 3mm for optimal grip).
Keep your windshield washer fluid topped up with an anti-freeze solution to clear frost or dirt.
Have your battery checked. Cold weather can drain older car batteries quickly.
2. Adjust your driving:
Drive slower than usual, especially in areas prone to ice.
Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front; stopping distances can double in wet conditions and increase tenfold on icy roads.
Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, which can cause skidding.
3. Be aware of high-risk areas:
Watch for black ice in shaded areas, near water, and on bridges.
Exercise caution on rural roads, which may not be gritted or cleared as promptly as motorways.
4. Be prepared for emergencies:
Keep an emergency kit in your car, including a torch, warm clothing, non-perishable snacks, and a phone charger. If the weather is severe, consider postponing non-essential journeys.
