Shona Goring – what being a solicitor means to me

“I know I will always have a strong sense of justice in me, because it runs so deep.”

I started working in the personal injury law arena because I really wanted to help people who had their lives turned upside down as a result of accidents.

The reason I felt so strongly about this is because of a crime incident that happened to me in my own life when I was a teenager.

While I was thankfully unharmed, the incident was extremely traumatic, and unfortunately the criminals who were involved were not prosecuted.

For me, this set off an inner calling for justice and a drive to right wrongs. Studying law after secondary school became the obvious path – I was committed to being able to use the law to get some kind of remedy for people who had been wronged like I had been.

While I initially thought I would be involved in criminal law, it was when I learned more about personal injury law that I found my calling.

When I saw how personal injury law helps people who have been involved in accidents, it was like a light switched on for me. I would be able to give people justice, but through the civil courts.

I know I will always have that strong sense of justice in me, because it runs so deep.

I can now use that drive and determination to help people who have been wronged; the satisfaction this gives me when I get a positive outcome for someone who has been injured when it was not their fault, is everything.

I know that the law can’t undo what has happened to someone, but compensation is often the best thing we can give them to help them get their lives back on track. And more than that, it’s about getting justice for my clients.

I find that to be very rewarding, and it’s what keeps me motivated every day.
