3 things to consider before having cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery is a serious undertaking, and like all medical procedures, can have serious consequences when not administered correctly. Here are 3 important considerations before having a procedure.

Cosmetic surgery (or plastic surgery) has become increasingly popular in Ireland in recent years. It is often used to improve someone’s confidence or self-esteem, or it may be necessary following an injury or to correct a disfigurement. There can be benefits if the surgery is done correctly, but there can also be risks.

Regardless of the reasons why a person chooses cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery, medical negligence is not something the patient should have to worry about.

Elaine Hickey is Head of Medical Negligence at Tracey Solicitors LLP. She has handled many personal injury claims over the years for people who have been injured through cosmetic procedures and surgeries.

Elaine says that although cosmetic surgery is becoming more commonplace in Ireland, it is still vital to conduct thorough research beforehand.

“Firstly,” says Elaine, “make sure you’re going to a hospital or clinic that has a strong reputation in the type of surgery you would like to have done. Also, check that your surgeon is an Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons (IAPS) accredited surgeon and registered on the IAPS website.”

According to IAPS, operations are being carried out in Ireland by doctors without proper surgical qualifications. There is no governance over the term ‘cosmetic surgeon’ and many doctors who use the term ‘cosmetic’ do not have this specialist training. Only surgeons who have completed their specialist training in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery are qualified to work in this field, although unfortunately this is not regulated in Ireland.

“Number two,” adds Elaine, “I’d advise you to have a meeting with the plastic surgeon well in advance and ask plenty of questions. I’ve dealt with many people who didn’t have that appointment and they didn’t quite understand what they were going to go through.”

“And thirdly,” she adds, “I’d advise that when you’re speaking to your plastic surgeon that you understand the pros and cons of that surgery so that you’re under no illusion as to what may go wrong. Obviously you want everything to go right, but it’s really important to understand the potential negative impacts of the surgery and to factor that into your decision.”
